Carolina Speed 59 Columbus Lions 44 |
The Carolina Speed came into Saturday's game against the Columbus Lions looking to rebound following a close loss to division rival Huntington. Columbus was coming off a victory over the Baltimore Mariners and were hoping to carry their momentum into Concord. Coach Robinson and the Speed had other plans.
The first quarter showed what kind of offense that both teams brought to the table. Carolina Speed quarterback Tory Woodbury passed for 3 touchdowns and rushed for another. Even with his spectacular individual effort the Speed still found themselves trailing at halftime, 30-28.
If the first half was about the Speed's offense then the second half had to be about their defense. Defensive back Jo Jo Polk showed why he is considered one of the best in the league with two interceptions in the second half, one he returned for a touchdown and another to prevent a touchdown in the end zone. James "Woody" Woodruff forced a fumble on a vicious hit to Columbus wide receiver, Gerald Giles.

Carolina Speed Comeback Falls Short |
|
"The Carolina Speed played the East Division leading Huntington Heroes Saturday Night at Cabarrus Arena & Events Center. Where the Heroes survived Carolina's rally to win 40-35.
Carolina got off to a good start as Laroche "Lil' Georgia" Jackson returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown. Giving the Speed an early lead, but the Speed soon found themselves in a hole with Huntington scoring 24 unanswered points. Then linebacker Tony George stripped fullback Wilmont Perry and returned it for the Speed touchdown. That play was a huge momentum swing for the Speed that gave them new life heading into halftime trailing 27-21.
Following the break Coach Ramon Robinson and his players continued there push back and not give up. The defense allowed only 13 points during the second half, which put the ball back in the offense hands. DeMarcus Fox returned to the line up, for the first time since week one against Erie, and helped create opportunities for veteran receiver Cornellis White. White made the most of his opportunities and had a fantastic one-handed catch running across the middle of the field. Running back Jimmy Bell had another big game scoring three touchdowns and dominated Huntington in the red zone.

The Carolina Speed came up huge in their game against the Canton Legends last Saturday in Canton, Ohio.
Canton found themselves stuck on the one-yard line as time expired, giving the Speed a 38-35 comeback victory, which took them to 2-1 on the season.
Canton slipped to 0-2, coming up a yard and a half short of winning scores in the two games combined.
It appeared the Legends might get their first win when Canton native Ryan Brinson intercepted a Tory Woodbury pass with approximately 54 seconds left in the game.
However, the Speed defense stood firm and kept the Legends from crossing the goal line.
“The defense was stellar as usual,” Head Coach Ramon Robinson said after the victory.
Robinson was especially pleased with the play of Hakim Pearce, who converted from running back to defensive end this season and showed a strong presence in the pass rush.
